Barbara J. Krumsiek President, Chief Executive Officer and Chair of Calvert Group, Ltd.
Barbara J. Krumsiek is Chair, CEO and President of Calvert Group, Ltd., a leading investment management and mutual fund firm headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. Calvert manages approximately $15 billion
in assets across 41 mutual funds, including award-winning fixed income portfolios, and a full family of equities funds including nationally recognized socially responsible mutual funds. Ms. Krumsiek's career in the investment industry spans three decades. Before joining Calvert as CEO in 1997, Ms. Krumsiek was a Managing Director at Alliance Capital Management LP in New York City where she was responsible for mutual fund and variable insurance product lines representing over $17 billion in assets.
At Calvert, she has presided over a period of dramatic growth and increased visibility both within the socially-responsible investment sector and in the financial services industry as a whole. Under her leadership, the firm has achieved significant revenue growth and sales have grown seven-fold. Calvert's presence among individual investors, advisors and retirement plans, including 401(k) plans, has expanded dramatically.
Ms. Krumsiek has led Calvert in several important initiatives pertaining to advancing women and minorities in business. In 2004, with the support of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), Calvert created the Calvert Women's Principles, a code of corporate conduct focusing on gender equality and women's empowerment. Also in 2004, Calvert created, and called on companies to adopt, model charter language for corporate nominating and governance committees focused on attaining diversity in corporate board rooms. These initiatives were recognized in June 2007 when Barbara accepted the "Women of Concern" award from Concern Worldwide for "developing innovative and precedent setting initiatives that strive to empower women worldwide."
Throughout her career, Ms. Krumsiek has been recognized as a pre-eminent business leader. In 2007, Washingtonian Magazine included her among the "150 Most Influential People in Washington D.C." In 2006, she was named one of "Washington DC's 100 Most Powerful Women" for the third time by Washingtonian Magazine and one of the "Top 100 Maryland Women" by the Daily Record. In 2005, she was awarded the Athena Award by the Women's Business Owners of Montgomery County. She was named one of 50 "Women Who Mean Business" in Washington D.C. by the Washington Business Journal in 2004.
Ms. Krumsiek served as the 2007 Chair of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, Washington D.C.'s regional Chamber of Commerce. She is on the board of the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., and the Federal City Council. In 2007 she joined the board of PEPCO Holdings, Inc.
Ms. Krumsiek's community involvement is extensive. She is Vice-Chair of the Board of The Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation, and serves on the Council for the Future of Courant at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. In addition, she is on the Board of Goodwill of Greater Washington, and the Trickle Up Program in New York City.
Graduating Phi Beta Kappa with honors from Douglass College, Rutgers University, Ms. Krumsiek received a Bachelor's degree in mathematics. She received a Master's degree in mathematics from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University. In 2000, the Rutgers University Alumni Federation added her to the Hall of Distinguished Alumni, and in that same year, Douglass College and the Associate Alumnae named her to The Douglass Society. In May, 2002 Georgetown University awarded Ms. Krumsiek the Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa, citing her work in advancing the critical dialogue regarding the role of business in society.
Ms. Krumsiek, a native New Yorker, resides in Bethesda, Maryland with her husband, Bart Leonard, and their two daughters.
Karen Becker Chief Compliance Officer, Calvert Funds Ms. Becker reports directly to the fund boards and is responsible for developing and administering the funds' policies and procedures which are designed to prevent violation of federal securities laws. She has been with Calvert for 22 years. Prior to assuming this role, she was Senior Vice President of Calvert Client Services and served as the Anti-Money Laundering Officer for Calvert. During her early years at Calvert she managed the day-to-day processing of work within the transfer agent and in 1988 she took over as head of the telephone-servicing group. In the mid 1990s she was part of the conversion team that outsourced the transfer agent function to DST/BFDS in Kansas City and in her role as SVP Client Services had daily oversight for the outside transfer agent function. Drawing on her industry knowledge and her strength for processing efficiencies, Mr. Becker led Calvert's inter-functional team that launched the 529 Plan for the District of Columbia in 2002. She has been an active member of the ICI Operations and Transfer Agent Committees and is now a member of the ICI's Compliance Committee, the National Society of Compliance Professionals, in addition to serving on the FINRA Series 6 and 26 exam review committee. She earned a B.A. in Government and Economics from St. Lawrence University in Canton New York and has her Series 7 and 24 securities licenses.
Craig Cloyed President, Calvert Distributors, Inc. Mr. Cloyed joined Calvert in February 1998 and serves as National Sales Manager. Prior to joining Calvert, he was President of Berger Distributors, Inc. and Chief Marketing Officer for Berger Associates, Inc., where he oversaw the sales and marketing to all distribution channels. Before Berger, he spent six years as Director of the Institutional Division and global partner of Invesco Funds Group where he founded and grew the institutional group to $6 billion in assets, in addition to establishing various sales groups and internal infrastructure. In total, Mr. Cloyed has more than 30 years of sales and marketing experience in the financial services industry.
Bennett Freeman Senior Vice President for Social Research and Policy Mr. Freeman leads Calvert's Social Research Department and directs its company research and analysis as well as its policy and advocacy work. From 2003 until early 2006, he led Burson-Marsteller's Global Corporate Responsibility practice advising multinationals on policy development, stakeholder engagement and communications strategies related to human rights, labor rights and sustainable development. During the Clinton Administration he served in three positions as a political appointee in the State Department, most recently as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor from 1999 to early 2001. In that capacity, he led the development of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, the first human rights standard forged by governments, companies and NGOs for the extractive sectors. Previously he was Senior Advisor to Under Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Stuart Eizenstat, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs and Chief Speechwriter for Secretary of State Warren Christopher. Earlier in his career he was Manager-Corporate Affairs for General Electric and a presidential campaign aide to former Vice President Walter Mondale. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Oxfam America, the Board of the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative, and on the Steering Committee of Amnesty International USA's Business and Human Rights program. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Mr. Freeman earned an MA in Modern History from Oxford and an AB in History from Berkeley.
Blair Johnson Vice President, Strategic Planning and Corporate Development Mr. Johnson joined Calvert in 2007. He has over 23 years of experience in the high technology and financial services industries. Prior to Calvert, he was on the faculty of Johns Hopkins University, Carey School of Business, where his areas of expertise were corporate strategy and marketing. He joined The Carey Business School after holding Corporate Development and Internal Audit leadership positions with the Lincoln National Corporation. Prior to that, he held a number of finance and marketing leadership positions with the General Electric Corporation. He earned his MBA from Johns Hopkins University and a BS in Finance from the University of Connecticut. He is also a certified six-sigma black belt.
Lee Nienaber Vice President, Information Technology Mr. Nienaber joined Calvert in 1988 and has over 26 years of information technology experience. He holds a B.S. in Information Systems from Fordham University and an M.S. in Information Technology from George Washington University.
Catherine Roy, CFA Chief Investment Officer, Fixed Income Ms. Roy joined Calvert in 2004 as Senior Vice President and Chief Investment Officer of Fixed Income for Calvert Asset Management Company. She has over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry. Prior to joining Calvert, she was Head of U.S. Fixed Income and Senior Portfolio Manager at Baring Asset Management where she was responsible for managing the U.S. fixed income team. Her responsibilities included investment oversight of U.S. fixed income portfolios, serving as U.S. specialist for global fixed income policy, and chairing the Core Plus Fixed Income Strategy Team. Prior to that, Ms. Roy served in various Portfolio roles including a position as Senior Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager at Scudder Kemper Investments where she managed $11 billion in fixed income assets for insurance companies and also as Chief Investment Officer at Massachusetts insurer, SBLI. Ms. Roy holds a B.A. from Barnard College.
Reginald Stanley Chief Marketing Officer Mr. Stanley has led Calvert's marketing and product development initiatives for the past seven years. He has enjoyed twenty-five years of investment, economic development and entrepreneurial experiences. Prior to Calvert he served as President of Boston Community Managed Assets and Chief Operating Officer of its CDFI holding company, Boston Community Capital (BCC). He joined BCC after spending seven years and holding several leadership positions at Fidelity Investments, including Vice President of High Net Worth Marketing, Customer Development and E-Commerce. He has worked at the consulting firms of Bain & Company and McKinsey & Company, as well as served on several community and non-profit boards aimed at civil justice, economic development, equality and quality of life issues. His current board affiliations include: The Social Investment Forum, The Calvert Foundation, Echoing Green, Shared Interest, and Doorways to Dreams Fund. Mr. Stanley is a recent fellow of the Southern Africa/United States Center for Leadership and Public Values. He earned his MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with honors with a BA from the University of Pennsylvania.
Alison Smith Vice President, Client Services Operations Ms. Smith is responsible for oversight and coordination of vendor relationships by monitoring the activities of Calvert's primary service vendors to ensure that accuracy, timeliness in service, and the highest level of customer service are provided to shareholders and brokers. She is responsible for ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements by maintaining the Customer Identification Program, NASD Continuing Education requirements, and serving as Calvert's Anti-Money Laundering Officer. Ms. Smith has 23 years of experience with Calvert during which she supervised the Investor Relations department. Ms. Smith earned a BA in Economics from the University of Maryland. She is NASD Series 7 and 24 licensed.
William M. Tartikoff Senior Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel Prior to joining Calvert in January 1990, he was Vice President and Associate Counsel for T. Rowe Price Associates. Mr. Tartikoff was Assistant Counsel for the Investment Company Institute from 1977 to 1982 and with the Internal Revenue Service, Employee Plans, and Exempt Organizations Branch from 1972 to 1977. He is a graduate of the American University (BBA 1969, JD 1972) and received a LLM (Taxation) from Georgetown University. Mr. Tartikoff authored "Treatment of Mutual Funds under ERISA," Duke Law Journal (Vol. 1979, No. 2) and is a frequent speaker on mutual funds and other related matters. He served as a former Director for ICI Mutual Insurance Company and served on the Board (former Chair) of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic, and on the Board of Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, including two years as its Finance Committee Chair. Mr. Tartikoff is currently Chair of the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington.
Kathy Torrence Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Partnerships Ms. Torrence serves as Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Partnerships and is responsible for developing and implementing sustainable employment practices, improving Calvert's position in corporate social responsibility and overseeing Calvert's Human Resource function. Ms. Torrence has over 20 years of experience in human resources which includes community involvement and corporate social responsibility. She has served the community on several college and university committees and volunteer boards. She is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and World at Work, a volunteer and board member with the Shepherd's Table, a board member of Greater DC Cares, and an advisory board member of the Sustainable Business Network of Washington.
Ronald M. Wolfsheimer Senior Vice President, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer Mr. Wolfsheimer, CPA, CBA, CMFC, has been with Calvert since 1979. He is Chief Financial and Administrative Officer of Calvert Group, Ltd. and Treasurer of each of the Calvert Funds. Mr. Wolfsheimer received his MS in Management with a concentration on Management Information Systems from the University of Maryland University College after graduating from Indiana University with honors where he earned his BS in Accounting. Mr. Wolfsheimer is a member of the Investment Company Institute's Accounting/Treasurer's Committee and was a member of the industry team that developed the white paper on accounting for multiple classes of shares. He has been a regular speaker on various topics including audit committees as well as tax, accounting, and operational issues facing mutual funds and their advisors.
Stan Young Vice President, Client Services Mr. Young is responsible for the day-to-day management of the client/intermediary call service center and Distribution & Marketing support to ensure that the highest level of customer service is provided to shareholders and brokers. He is responsible for establishing a strong regulatory framework in which procedures and conduct are evaluated to comply with NASD and SEC rules and regulations. Mr. Young has 25 years of experience with Calvert during which he supervised the Broker Operations Department. Mr. Young received his BA in Biology & Psychology from George Mason University. He is NASD 7, 24 and Insurance and Annuity licensed.
