Social Research and Analysis
As Calvert seeks to provide shareholders with competitive financial performance and leadership on corporate environment, social and governance (ESG) issues, the quality of our research is essential. We believe that companies that effectively manage corporate responsibility and sustainability-related risks and opportunities should perform well over the long-term. The Social Research Department of Calvert Asset Management Company, Inc. works closely with our portfolio managers as they identify a company for potential stock selection. Our analysts examine whether the company meets the established ESG criteria of the funds.
Research and Advocacy
Our research analysts review and evaluate companies on seven key criteria: environment; workplace; human rights; Indigenous Peoples' rights; community relations; product safety and impact; and governance/business ethics. We base our analysis on qualitative information and quantitative data from a variety of sources, including SEC filings, reports from the UN, World Bank and other international institutions, government and corporate social responsibility and sustainability reports, company websites, and media coverage. We also contact non-profit groups-including advocacy NGOs with particular expertise-as useful to inform our analysis. In order to sharpen our understanding of a specific sector, we conduct industry reviews to determine how certain companies compare to their peers against the backdrop of emerging best practices as well as key issues and trends.
Calvert uses strategic corporate engagement and advocacy as tools to encourage positive change in companies where certain commitments are lacking or where further progress is considered to be within reach. As investors, we have an opportunity to engage with companies on ESG-related issues where we think that shareholder value is at stake. We also meet with companies that may not meet all our criteria, but are nonetheless willing to engage and consider making corporate responsibility and sustainability commitments that can translate into better long-term performance.
