Calvert - Socially Responsible Investing - Issue Briefs
Issue Briefs

Calvert's Issue Briefs provide a close look at how Calvert's social and environmental criteria work in practice. These issue briefs:

  • Describe the issue
  • Review Calvert's methodology for analysis, including specific company examples
  • Provide examples of Calvert's advocacy work in these areas
  • Link to our Know What You Own Screening Tool

We currently offer issue briefs on the following topics:

Animal Welfare:   Calvert looks at animal testing, entertainment exploitation, and animal husbandry, which is the focus of our most recent animal welfare advocacy efforts.

Climate Change:  An area of growing concern, Calvert reviews company responses to climate risk, including energy efficiency initiatives and greenhouse gas emissions reductions.

Community Relations:   Calvert expects companies to be strong corporate citizens and contribute to the betterment of the communities in which they operate.

Corporate Governance:  Calvert holds companies to high ethical standards, especially regarding corporate transparency and board structure.

Diversity:   Calvert reviews all aspects of corporate diversity, with special emphasis on executive and board diversity, as well as the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender workers.

Environment:  Calvert's multi-faceted environmental analysis encompasses resource use, compliance with regulations, the link between environmental governance and management, and product lifecycle impacts.

Human Rights:   Calvert's long-standing concerns about human rights have led us to emphasize corporate operations in conflict-zones such as Sudan, companies' global supply chain standards, and censorship concerns such as those involving China and the Internet.

Indigenous Peoples' Rights:   Calvert expects companies to refrain from using offensive images or names and to honor the rights of Indigenous Peoples in the areas of land and resource use.

Labor and Workplace Safety:   In order to support safety and equity in the workplace, Calvert focuses on workplace safety and health, quality of work life, union and labor relations, and fair employment practices.

Product Safety and Impact:   Calvert's analysis in this area - which includes the exclusionary screens of alcohol, gambling, tobacco, and weapons - reflects our belief that consumers deserve products that are safe, of high quality, and free from association with offensive images.

Weapons:  Calvert will avoid investing in companies that manufacture, design, or sell weapons or the critical components of weapons that violate International Humanitarian Law (IHL), or manufacture, design, or sell inherently offensive weapons,or the munitions used by such weapons.
